BEWDLEY’s new Mayor has said he is looking forward to a busy year in his new role.

John Beeson took over the role from Calne Edginton-White following the Annual Town Council meeting held on Friday, May 13.

He said: “I’m sure it’s going to be a very busy year.

“The biggest thing in the next 12 months will be the completion of the neighbourhood plan, which we hope to be ready for referendum in May 2017 to coincide with Worcestershire County Council elections.

“We will have more public consultation events, this time with more of a focus on what is important for current or potential business owners. I hope to work closely with shopkeepers in the town, after all the shops are the lifeblood of Bewdley.

“The town council are currently in very advanced talks with a new market provider. Bewdley is a market town first and foremost – there have been markets in the town for more than 500 years. As well as revitalising the Christmas market, the new company will put on markets throughout the year.

“Another priority for the coming year will be working with Wyre Forest District Council to see what local services we can take on and enhance. One of the biggest concerns is cleanliness around the town so we will be looking at ways the town council can enhance the street cleaning services the district council can provide.

“I intend to have some fun though as well as all this hard work – I am especially looking forward to the 50th Bewdley Carnival and the Queen’s 90th birthday weekend, both on the weekend of June 11 and 12.”

Councillor Beeson will raise funds for the Citizens Advice Bureau during his mayoral year, as well as a community group fund where Bewdley-based charities and community groups will be encouraged to come forward for.

During the meeting, Councillor Philip Edmundson was also elected as Deputy Mayor for the second year.
