Home visits for unregistered households
Bewdley Town Council
Residents who have still not replied to a letter about registering to vote can expect a knock on their door from one of Wyre Forest District Council’s canvassers.
At the end of July, the authority sent letters to all households in the district, asking residents to check and confirm the details that appear on the electoral register. Since then the council has sent reminder letters to more than 15,000 households which had not responded. There are still around 9,300 (19.9%) households which have not replied and will be getting a knock on their door.
Canvassers will also visit the homes of 3,200 residents who aren’t registered to vote as they’ve not responded to an invitation to join the electoral register.
Ian Miller, Electoral Registration Officer at Wyre Forest District Council, said:
“We’ve been urging people to respond as soon as possible and get on the electoral register. It is possible that a general election will happen before the end of the year so it’s really important you are registered to vote.
“Residents are required by law to respond and register every year and they can face the risk of being fined up to £1,000 if they don’t.”
“Our canvassers will be visiting the homes of people who haven’t responded from Thursday (19 September). If they do come to your home, they will show identification and will be happy to help you complete the form.”
Credit reference agencies also use information from the register of electors to update their records. This means it can be much harder to obtain credit if you are not on the electoral register.
Anyone who needs help to complete the form should contact 01562 732928 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
