Bewdley Development Trust (BDT) was set up in 2002, initially as Opportunity Bewdley, to benefit the communities of Bewdley, Wribbenhall, Ribbesford, Rock and Arley. As a Community Interest Company it has used its profits and assets for the good of the community and has been run by a Board of unpaid volunteers.

There’s no doubt that leading on the refurbishment of St George’s Hall has been BDT’s proudest and most significant achievement. BDT has also made big contributions to Bewdley communities through, for example, Bewdley’s Local Produce Market, the Bewdley website, its newsletter on activities and events in Bewdley and the Spring and Harvest Fairs.

In all cases, BDT identified a gap in local provision, and found a way to address it, with the help of our brilliant volunteers and working with our local partners. These partners include Bewdley Town Council, Wyre Forest District Council, Bewdley Museum, Bewdley Festival, Bewdley Bike Week, Wyre Forest Landscape Partnership and Transition Bewdley.

BDT has explored a number of options for securing a long-term income that would enable it to continue to develop assets and profits for the good of the community but, so far, none has been found. BDT is concerned, therefore, that its position could present a risk to the continuation of the activities it currently provides. BDT is keen to ensure that these successful activities can continue, under the most appropriate management.

BDT has therefore made arrangements with Bewdley Town Council for it to run the Local Produce Market from August 2016. The Town Council is already working with a commercial partner to operate a vintage market, and BDT believes it makes sense for a single body to co-ordinate these markets. The Town Council will also expand its new website to provide a single web location for all information about Bewdley events and activities.

The Harvest Fair this October will take place with the support and involvement of our partners, including the Museum, Town Council and the Civic Society, and promises to be as good as ever.

BDT’s Board will remain in place and will continue to look for resources and opportunities to benefit our communities. As ever, BDT will do what it can to benefit Bewdley.

Jacky Griffin, Chairman of BDT said

“BDT is proud of its many achievements in support of Bewdley communities, particularly the refurbishment of St George’s Hall. We are pleased to have worked in partnership with many Bewdley organisations to initiate and develop enterprises for the benefit of residents, businesses and visitors. The Directors are delighted that through the support of these partners our current activities in the town will continue.”
