Chess club members in Bewdley have held their annual chess competition.

Over 10 people took part this year in the knock-out contest with John Whitehead claiming the St Anne’s Plate after narrowly defeating John Holbrook in the final. The event was sponsored by Bewdley bar and restaurant, The Courtyard, with owner Antony Jarvis presenting the plate to the winner plus a meal for two at the Courtyard for the runner up John Holbrook .

Keith Thompson from Bewdley Chess Club, said: “Our annual tournament is always a great event and congratulations to our winner John. A huge thank you also goes to Antony and his team at The Courtyard for sponsoring. Like us, Antony is keen to see Bewdley becoming a more chess friendly town and it’s these types of tournaments which really help to get people involved.”

Also a member of the club is Worcestershire Schools Chess Champion, Cameron Henry. The Bewdley-born nine-year-old has won the county’s school contest at under 7 and under 8 level for the past two years.

Readers interested in joining the Bewdley Chess Club can attend on Wednesdays between 12pm and 2pm at St Anne’s Church in the town centre.
